Geomagnetic Storm Watch Issued for October 3-5

A G1-G3 (Minor to Strong) geomagnetic storm watch has been issued for October 3-5, 2024. This forecast is due to the expected arrival of a coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with a powerful X7.1-class solar flare detected on October 1st. While auroras are typically seen closer to the poles, there is a possibility that strong geomagnetic activity may make the northern lights visible as far south as parts of central Illinois.

In addition to the aurora potential, there could be minor effects on technology, including power grid fluctuations and disruptions to satellite communications and GPS systems. Most infrastructure impacts are expected to be manageable.
